Costières de Nîmes

Château de Peyguerol

AOP Costières de Nîmes

The earliest known Château in the Appelation. Part of the village of Générac, it has always been a wine estate and its boundaries have hardly changed over the centuries (53 ha, 22 classified AOC). It gets its current name from Marie-Gabrielle de Peygueirolles who owned it in 1845. Officially recorded in 1749 as being “in the parish of Nîmes”, it was mentioned in 1679 as having been there “since time immemorial” in an official document stating its vineyards.

Château de Peyguerol has belonged to the Verdier brothers for the last twenty years.

Terroir

The soils are highly typical of the appellation with large smooth stones from alluvials deposits from the Rhone and Durance rivers. In summer they heat up during the day and give off the heat at night. The red clay gives Costières land a coppery tinge and retains the heavy seasonal rains in the groundwater which irrigates over the year these vineyards set about with tall dark cypresses.

Grape Varieties

The varieties are typical of the appellation : 75 % Grenache & 25 % Syrah.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested when perfectly ripe then destemme and cold-macerated for the time required to achieve the depth of colour wanted. After pressing adapted to the different types of grape, followed by settling, the must is fermented at controlled temperatures to enhance the expression of the fruit.

Maturing

When alcoholic fermentation is complete, the wines are racked twice and blended. Then they are left to mature in refrigerated vats for 4 months before bottling.

Tasting Notes

The color is a strong rose petal pink. The nose has fragances of citrus fruit and peach juice. It is nice and lively in the mouth. Accompaniment advices: Enjoy with barbecues, cold meat and exotic food.

Ageing Potential

To be enjoyed within a year of bottling.
